Intertek among the first globally accredited bodies to provide CBAM verification across all six regulated sectors
16 Oct 2026
Becomes the first organisation accredited by SWEDAC to verify embedded emissions under the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, strengthening support for companies navigating new carbon compliance requirements.
Stockholm, Sweden: Intertek, a leading Total Quality Assurance provider to industries worldwide, has achieved accreditation to provide verification under the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (EU CBAM).
Accredited by the Swedish Board for Accreditation and Conformity Assessment (SWEDAC), Intertek is among the first organisations globally to verify embedded emissions across all six CBAM sectors: iron and steel, aluminium, fertilisers, cement, hydrogen and electricity.
The accreditation enables Intertek to provide independent verification of emissions data used by companies importing goods covered by CBAM into the European Union.
Applicable from 1 January 2026 with the aim of preventing carbon leakage and creating a level playing field between companies within and outside the EU, CBAM complements the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and introduces a carbon pricing system for selected imported emission-heavy goods based on their embedded emissions.
Under EU CBAM, companies importing products covered by the framework into the EU must submit annual declarations based either on actual verified emissions data or on default emissions values. When actual emissions data is used, the verification must be carried out by an independent verifier accredited by an EU national accreditation body.
Intertek's accreditation builds on decades of experience delivering accredited greenhouse gas verification, including services supporting the EU ETS, greenhouse gas reporting programmes and product carbon footprint assessments. Combined with its global network and sustainability assurance expertise, Intertek is well positioned to support organisations managing increasingly complex carbon reporting obligations across international supply chains.
The accreditation further expands Intertek's portfolio of sustainability and carbon assurance services, supporting manufacturers, exporters and importers as carbon transparency becomes an increasingly important business and regulatory requirement.
Samir Ahmed, Vice President, Business Assurance – EMEA at Intertek, says: “Achieving EU CBAM accreditation is a significant milestone for Intertek and reinforces our commitment to supporting businesses through their transition to a lower-carbon economy. The accreditation enables us to support customers throughout their compliance journey, combining technical expertise in emissions verification with a deep understanding of global supply chains.”
